Woodanilling is a small rural town in the Great Southern region of Western Australia, situated approximately 240 kilometres southeast of the state capital Perth. The town is located in the Shire of Woodanilling and has a population of around 400 people.

The name 'Woodanilling' is derived from an Aboriginal word that is believed to mean 'place of plenty kangaroos'. The town was originally established in the 1860s as a timber settlement, with the surrounding forests providing an abundant resource for the industry. The first sawmill in the area was established in 1866, and by the early 1900s, the town had grown to include a number of businesses and services, including a post office, a hotel, and a general store.

The early settlers of Woodanilling were primarily British and Irish, with many coming to the area to work in the timber industry. The town also attracted a number of Chinese immigrants, who came to Australia in search of gold and later became involved in market gardening and other businesses. The Chinese community had a significant presence in Woodanilling in the early 1900s, with the town's first Chinese market garden established in 1904.

Woodanilling played a role in the state's early railway development, with the town being the site of a railway siding in the late 1800s. The railway line, which connected the Great Southern region with the state capital Perth, was extended to Woodanilling in 1899. The town continued to grow throughout the early 1900s, with many new buildings and infrastructure projects funded by the state government.

During World War II, Woodanilling was home to a large army camp, which was established to train soldiers for the war effort. The camp was located on the outskirts of the town and included a hospital, mess hall, and accommodation for thousands of soldiers. After the war, the camp was closed and the land was returned to local farmers.

Today, Woodanilling remains a small rural town, with a focus on agriculture and tourism. The town is home to a number of historic buildings, including the Woodanilling Hotel, which dates back to the early 1900s. There are also a number of local attractions in the area, including the Woodanilling Pioneer Museum, which showcases the town's early history and highlights the many industries that have been prominent in the area over the years.

Woodanilling is also known for its natural beauty, with the surrounding forests and hills providing ample opportunities for bushwalking, birdwatching, and other outdoor activities. The town is home to a number of parks and reserves, including the Woodanilling Nature Reserve, which is a popular spot for picnicking and camping.

In recent years, the town has seen growth in its tourism industry, with a number of new businesses and attractions opening up in the area. The town is also known for its community spirit, with a number of local events and festivals held throughout the year.

Overall, Woodanilling embodies the history and character of rural Western Australia, with its strong agricultural roots, rich cultural heritage, and breathtaking natural landscapes. It is a town that has weathered the test of time and continues to thrive in the 21st century.
